Scripps Health sought applications from qualified artists, to be considered for commissions of artwork and artwork purchase, for several Scripps Health hospitals and medical offices throughout San Diego County. Two commissions were awarded to Cheryl Ehlers, 3'x4' and 4'x5' artworks in ocean themes to be placed in the Scripps Cancer Center 2022.

Qualifications for selections were based on creativity and strength of artwork, ability to demonstrate the style of the principles of the art program, technical competence, aptitude for planning, experience of working on art projects, and accessibility and understanding of the use of appropriate technology.

Scripps Health recognizes the healing value of the arts to improve patient, visitor, and staff experiences and will be selecting artists who can positively impact the environment based on the latest best practice information and evidence in the field of Arts in Health. Art will be placed in corridors, meditation spaces, waiting and consultation rooms, patient rooms, and a variety of other public areas

Its a brand new day as COAL announces new 2022 President, Cheryl Ehlers

Its a brand new day as COAL announces new 2022 President, Cheryl Ehlers

It’s a brand-new day at the North Coastal Art Gallery, managed by the Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League, (COAL), as we announce our new 2022 President, Cheryl Ehlers. She is tasked with bringing the gallery into the lime light after the delay of COVID and overcoming damage to the gallery that left it closed for two months. The Board and artists worked diligently, and now we are all looking forward to providing opportunities for our artists to engage the community with a full calendar of activities.

Cheryl is a Carlsbad resident of over 37 years, and previously retired from the City of Encinitas as the Assistant Arts Administrator. We look forward to tapping into her vast knowledge of resources in working with non-profits, event coordination, artist advocacy and events. Presently she is involved in several communities and works with many diverse non-profits, encompassing the Arts, Cultural Arts and Veteran groups. Currently, she is working closely with SIMA Management in the Carlsbad Village Faire to heighten the exposure of the art in the center by programming more events to engage the public at the center.

Her firm belief in giving back is rooted in her own family history, her aunts were fearlessly outspoken civil right activists, and overcame the cultural barriers of the day, and through their influences she learned to understand the importance of using her talents to make a difference in lives of those around her.

Besides being an award winning and well published artist, Cheryl formed The Stardust Arts, which broke ground in 2009 and has since instructed over 14,500 undeserved students. She is recognized by the State Assembly of California and the San Diego Board of Supervisors for her commitments to art in local cities. She believes in the power of positive thinking, while using it as an inspiration. “It’s not what you give, it is the satisfaction of knowing you helped another person, in some small way, that counts”.

The Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League is a 501 c (3) non-profit established in 1951 to promote the appreciation of fine arts and art education within the community. Located at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Suite 101, 92024, in the Carlsbad village Faire. Artist Paints for United Nations, International Piece Day

August 10th, 2013

Artist Paints for United Nations, International Piece Day

It is an honor to be selected amongst a handful of artists to paint for the United Nations, International Peace Day, 2013. This 5 X 12 canvas, Silent Beauty will be displayed in New York, then a journey to Paris to be projected on the UN building. At home in San Diego, it will be used on the Women Mural Miles in collaboration with Art Miles Mural Project and the San Diego Women Foundation for their upcoming campaign. It is an honor to be involved with so many wonderful causes globally.

Everyone knows silence is a powerful medicine. This canvas depicts the strength of women through the gawky age of teens, to the beauty of the mid life, and into the gentle aging of a woman. Beauty and silence are communication outlets that bring understanding, compassion, peace and love into the world. Coupled with the depiction of two green turtles both a male and female carry the weight of the world on their back and bring fortune to those they come in contact with. Spending 115 hours painting this piece has left me with an experience to treasure and remember for the remainder of my life. To experience the creation of Silent Beauty is wonderful, but to be able to share it with the world is a gift, states Cheryl. It is my depiction of peace in a small part of the world.

It is not enough to teach children how to read, write and count. Education has to cultivate mutual respect for others and the world in which we live, and help people forge more just, inclusive and peaceful societies." Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982. In 2001, the General Assembly established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire. The United Nations invites all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.

What an honor to be involved with so many wonderful people, organizations and groups that are united in the cause of spreading world peace and using art as one of the vehicles to reach out and communicate the message.

I would like to extend a special thank you to my photographer, Steve Deck for taking the care and time to photograph this piece, and memorialize it for time to come.
